The Ancestral Quest: Family History Basics (Where do I Begin?) This session introduces the audience to the basic forms for use in Genealogy and Family history research, and discusses a variety of basic sources available to use in your research. This workshop also discusses how to deal with the paper documents your will discover. We also cover the Internet and major online sources you can use. We finish off with a discussion of several genealogical programs available to capture your data. Format: 1 hour lecture Audience: Beginner Discovering Family History in the Attic There are a variety of things that can be found in your home – be it your attic, your basement or a spare room – wherever stuff accumulates. Many of the items will be various items that may have been handed down from a loved one or a distant relative. In this session, we look at the types of things that have the most genealogical significance and how the rest can be used to enhance your family history. Format: 1 hour lecture Audience: Beginner to Intermediate You've found it once, but can you do it again? Does your documentation tell others how they can find it? This session discusses the importance of recording where you found each tidbit you put into your family history. We look at the most common sources the family historian is bound to come across, as well as how to document those unusual documents that may appear in everyone’s research. In the longer workshop you get a change to practice documenting sources. In this session we look at the standard of proof currently used in the field of genealogy, define the terminology used in simple terms, and examine several historical documents to see how the terms relate to common documents that many people will be using in their research. There are key areas that will be covered, but side trips are encouraged based on audience questions or interest. The speaker is an expert on this software program and is willing to discuss and demonstrate all areas of the program. In this workshop, we discuss how to enter your data to make the most of RootsMagic's Publisher feature, how to set up a Publisher book project and the various sections that can make up the chapters. We also discuss various ways you can arrange the content, or chapters, of your book to create a memorable book you will be proud to pass along as your legacy to present and future generations. (What to do with all those piles of paper and other stuff) Synopsis: Are you a family historian or genealogist who is getting bogged down under the piles of paperwork? This workshop is for you. As you research your family history, you naturally gather a lot of paper records to document your discoveries. You also create innumerable pieces of paper (and lately digital images), whether you use a paper-based system or a genealogy program to track your ancestors and their families. This workshop is designed to show you a variety of ways to handle this onslaught of paper clutter so you access your family records in a matter of seconds. You will also discover ways to tackle your growing collection of photographs, digital images, artifacts, heirlooms and other memorabilia. Interactive discussion and questions are encouraged as the workshop progresses. Format: ˝ day or full day workshop Audience: Beginner to Intermediate (but everyone can pick something up) Genealogy Software Programs - Are they for the Serious Researcher? Synopsis: This session will look at the research process of the serious researcher, and where software programs can assist. Four of the leading genealogical programs for the PC (RootsMagic v3, Family Tree Maker v16, Legacy v6 and The Master Genealogist-TMG v7) will be compared. Topics will include ease of use, source citations, augmenting bare facts, creating narratives and chronological profiles, generating charts and reports, books and websites, and using the data with other programs such as word processors and spreadsheets.Time: one hour lecture, with a few minutes for Q&A.Audience: Beginner to Intermediate (but everyone
