About Us

The mission of Cobblestone Legacies is to help you, the family historian, discover your family legacy… so you can preserve your family heritage to share with future generations. The purpose of this web site is to introduce you to our services.

At Cobblestone Legacies, we specialize in Upper Canada and early Ontario records, and United Empire Loyalist research. We have experience in early US records for New England and the north-east US states related to the pre-Loyalist era families and their descendants. We have local access to the Archives of Ontario, the Metropolitan Toronto Reference Library, the North York Central Library, Toronto Archives and major Church archives, as well as numerous other local libraries, archives, museums, churches, cemeteries and repositories in central southern Ontario. We also have subscriptions to major internet-based resources.

About Bill Bienia

William H. (Bill) Bienia is the owner and principal researcher for Cobblestone Legacies, a genealogical and family history services business. Bill is a full-time professional genealogist, who has been involved in Ontario research for over 15 years. He specializes in 18th and 19th century records in Upper Canada, Canada West and early Ontario, and in Loyalist ancestry. He also researches records in the New England states and north-east US states for pre-Loyalist families.

Bill is a frequent researcher at many of the facilities in the Toronto area, in Halton, Peel and Wellington counties and around southern Ontario. He periodically researches at the Library and Archives Canada (LAC) in Ottawa and at the Family History Library (FHL) in Salt Lake City.

Genealogical Education and Experience

Bill is an active member of the Ontario Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG), and he is Indexing Coordinator for the Halton-Peel Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society (OGS). He a member of the faculty of the National Institute for Genealogical Studies in Toronto. He is also a member of the Genealogical Speakers Guild (GSG) and the International Society of Family History Writers and Editors (ISFHWE).

Bill is a past Vice-Chair for the Halton-Peel Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society (OGS), and he was the local Coordinator for the APOLROD project (the Association for the Preservation Of Land Registry Office Documents), which took inventories of the Halton County and Peel Country land records.

Bill has completed Certificate programs in Canadian Studies and United States Studies through the National Institute for Genealogical Studies in association with the Professional Learning Center of the University of Toronto. He has attended many workshops and seminars locally, at the Ontario Genealogical Society conferences and at national genealogical conferences in the US.

He has extensive experience with many of the popular genealogy programs, including RootsMagic, Legacy, The Master Genealogist (TMG), Family Tree Maker (FTM), and Genbox.

Other Education & Experience

Bill graduated from DeVry Institute of Technology with a Diploma in Electronics Engineering Technology. Bill retired in 2004 after nearly 35 years in the electronics industry. During this time he has gained a great deal of software expertise in Computer Aided Design programs as well as in general office software, such as Microsoft Office Professional, Microsoft FrontPage, and Corel Graphics Suite.

Bill has completed a Certificate in Fundamentals of Photography through Sheridan College, a Certificate in Technical Manual Writing through Humber College, and a Certificate in Project Planning, Analysis and Control through George Washington University.

Bill is an active volunteer in the community. He was with Scouts Canada for 9 years serving as an Assistant Club Leader and in various administrative roles including District President of Wellington District Council. He has been involved with Toastmasters since 1994, and has earned the Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) award from Toastmasters International. Bill served on the International Board of Directors for Toastmasters International from 2004 to 2006.

Bill lives in the historic community of Hillsburgh, Ontario with his wife Connie. Bill has 4 children, 2 of whom are married, and one granddaughter.
