Professionals are used to working from a wide variety genealogical input, from standard genealogical forms, such as pedigree charts and family group sheets, to computer generated forms to boxfuls of raw material. Organizing the materials you have collected and recording the information onto standard forms, or entering the data into a genealogical program, can save the time and expense of having the professional do this task. Although they may be able to do it more efficiently, it can still be expensive. Be sure to record the source of each piece of information you capture, whether it was a story related at a family reunion, a document you found in your attic or in an archives, or a website you discovered on the internet. Full time professionals have the time to visit the repositories that you may not be able to access because of your busy schedule or family commitments. These archives and libraries, churches and cemeteries, court houses and land record offices, as well as the many other repositories house records that may contain that illusive detail you have been searching for, or may provide those tidbits of information that would help illuminate the lives of your ancestors. Many professionals are in the business because they love the stimulus of the genealogical hunt and they get (almost) as excited at finding your family's information as you do. They want to help you discover information about your ancestors in a way that is comfortable and agreeable to you. Professionals who are associated with the Association of Professional Genealogists sign a Code of Ethics. See their brochure on hiring Professionals, which shows the Code of Ethics.
